Habit number two in “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” is to start with the end in mind. I always say that this book by Stephen Covey is a must-read for entrepreneurs. And in this video, I talk about why this habit #2 is particularly important to put into practice, and how relevant it is to reaching business goals.
Would you get into your car and just drive without knowing your destination? Would you repeat that every day? I’m guessing the answer is NO.
And as crazy as it sounds to get into a car without a destination, that’s exactly how most people drive their businesses. Not many people think about defining their final destination. What does it actually look like to reach your business goals?
When they start a business, it's either because they've had a good idea, or they’ve had a bad work experience. At first they do it to replace their income, which is absolutely fine. But then they get into the habit of just driving aimlessly, day in and day out. A lot of entrepreneurs fall into this trap.
Stephen Covey advises entrepreneurs to start with the end in mind, and for good reason. Just going on without a clear plan can create confusion and give you the feeling that you’re not going anywhere.
With the final picture in mind, it's a lot easier to reverse engineer, to get you where you want to go. You can break down the steps that you need to take to get to your business goals. It's also easier to bring other people on board when they understand what they're helping you or your business achieve.
Driving without a destination may be fun at times, but ultimately, it doesn’t serve you. If you start with the end in mind like Stephen Covey advises, your business journey can be a lot more rewarding.
